Where bricks per square meter actually comes from
A brick does not occupy the space of a brick. It occupies the space of a brick plus one joint, in both directions, because every brick carries half a joint on each of its four sides. So the rectangle a brick really takes up on the wall is its face length plus the joint, times its face height plus the joint. Divide one square meter by that rectangle and you have the count. That is the whole calculation, and it is why this tool asks for the brick instead of offering a list of them.
The joint is where the money is. It is a small number sitting next to two larger ones, and it is the easiest field on any masonry page to type in the wrong unit. A ten entered where inches were wanted is a joint thicker than the brick. A three-eighths entered where millimeters were wanted is a hairline. Neither one looks wrong on screen, and both change a normal wall order by thousands of bricks. That is why the tool reads your joint back against your brick face before it says anything else.
Take your openings off, because a wall with two windows and a door is not the wall you measured. Add a waste allowance from your own experience: breakage on the pallet is real, and so are the cut closers at every return. Then order in whatever unit your supplier actually sells: pallets and straps, not loose bricks.
