How to Become an Electrician

Paid from day one, no degree required. How the apprenticeship works, what the work is really like, and how to land your first spot.

The short answer: an electrical apprenticeship pays from day one and needs no degree. You are indentured to a licensed contractor, accumulate a required number of on-the-job hours, and go back to school in blocks between them. Getting the first placement is the hard part, and it is usually won by turning up in person rather than by applying online.

Somewhere in the second year, the math gets hard to ignore.

You are twenty. You have been pulling wire for fourteen months, and your paycheck cleared this morning. Your friend from high school is also twenty, halfway through a degree, and just watched another tuition installment leave an account that mostly holds loan money. You are both spending four to five years learning a profession. One of you is being paid to do it. The other is paying for the privilege, and will spend a decade working that difference back off.

That is the headline case for the electrical trade, and it is a real one. But it is not the whole picture. If you are deciding whether to do this, you deserve the whole picture: how the path actually works, what the work is actually like, and what the money honestly looks like. So here it is.

One thing before anything else: the specifics of licensing (how many hours you need, how schooling is scheduled, what the licenses are even called) are set by your province or state, and they genuinely differ. Everything in this article describes the shape of the path. Verify the numbers with your local licensing body or apprenticeship office before you plan around them.

How does an electrical apprenticeship actually work?

Becoming an electrician is an apprenticeship: a real job and a school program running side by side, usually over four to five years.

From day one you are an employee of an electrical contractor (or dispatched through a union training program), working on real jobs under the supervision of licensed electricians. You are paid from the first day: typically a set percentage of a journeyman's wage that steps up each year as you progress. First-year money is modest. It is also money, arriving while your classmates from high school are accumulating debt, and by the back half of the apprenticeship it is a legitimate full-time income.

Alongside the work, you complete classroom training: electrical theory, the electrical code, safety, blueprint reading. Depending on where you live, that might be one day a week at a technical college, evening classes, or full-time blocks of several weeks once a year. Each level typically ends in an exam, and you have to pass to move up.

At the end, after the required on-the-job hours, the schooling, and a final licensing exam, you hold a journeyman license (the name varies: journeyperson, certificate of qualification, and others). That license is the whole point. It says you can do electrical work without someone checking it, and it is the thing no layoff, no bad boss, and no economic cycle can take away from you.

Hours and school: the rhythm of it

The core requirement everywhere is supervised on-the-job hours: thousands of them. The totals vary by jurisdiction, but they are commonly in the range of several thousand hours accumulated over four to five years of full-time work. Again: your local body sets the real number, and some jurisdictions also credit school hours toward the total. Do not take any figure you read online, including this one, as your requirement.

What the rhythm feels like from inside: most of the year, you are simply working. You show up, you do the job, and the hours accumulate in the background the way mileage accumulates on a truck. Then a school block arrives and the pace changes: code books, load calculations, exam pressure. Then you are back on the tools, noticing that the theory suddenly explains things you had been doing by rote.

The classic mistake is treating school as an interruption of the real job. It is the other way around. Anyone can be trained to staple cable. The classroom material is what separates an electrician from an installer: the code, the theory, why the neutral does what it does. It is exactly the material the licensing exam and every inspection for the rest of your career will draw on. The apprentices who struggle are almost never failing on the tools. They are failing to take the book seriously.

What is the work actually like?

Honest version: it is physical, it is precise, and a surprising amount of it is detective work.

Physical, but not brute-force. Electrical is one of the lighter trades on the body compared with, say, concrete or framing. But you will spend real time in attics in July, in crawl spaces on your stomach, in trenches, and on ladders. You will also spend time doing genuinely fine work: terminating a panel so clean it looks drawn, bending conduit to a line, laying out a lighting plan.

The problem-solving is the part people underestimate. A finished circuit either works or it does not. When it does not, someone has to reason backward through walls they cannot see into: what is on this circuit, where does it go, what changed. Good troubleshooters are the most valuable people on any service crew, and troubleshooting is a skill you build for decades.

And the code runs through everything. Electrical work is licensed and inspected because the failure mode is a house fire. Some people find the rule-bound nature of it constraining; most electricians come to see it as the thing that makes the trade a profession. The stakes are the point.

The work also varies enormously by sector, which matters when you choose an employer. Residential new construction is fast and repetitive. Service and troubleshooting is varied, client-facing, and thinking-heavy. Commercial and industrial work runs bigger (conduit, three-phase, motor controls), with different rhythms and often different pay. You do not have to pick forever, but where you apprentice shapes what you learn first.

Journeyman, and then what

The journeyman license is where the ladder branches, not where it ends.

Stay on the tools. Plenty of electricians spend a whole career as working journeymen, and there is nothing lesser about it. An experienced service electrician is never out of work for long.

Run work. Foreman, then site supervisor, then project management. You trade some tool time for coordination: materials, schedules, other people's problems. Pay generally rises with the headaches.

Specialize. Controls, fire alarm, data, solar and battery storage, high voltage. Specialists are how you become the person other electricians call.

Go for the next license. Most jurisdictions have a tier above journeyman (often called a master electrician, sometimes an electrical contractor license), which is what typically allows you to pull permits and operate your own electrical business. Requirements vary (more years, another exam, sometimes business content), and again the names differ by province and state. This is the license behind every electrical company you have ever seen on a truck door.

Adjacent exits. Inspector, estimator, instructor at the technical college, utility work. The license opens doors that are not job sites.

One more property worth knowing at eighteen or at forty: the license travels reasonably well. Many provinces and states have reciprocity or standardized-exam arrangements with each other, though not all, and you should verify any specific move. But a licensed electrician relocating has an easier landing than almost any office professional doing the same.

What it pays, honestly

Any article that quotes you one confident salary number is doing you a disservice, because the honest answer is a range that moves with region, sector, union status, overtime, and the construction cycle.

A few things can be said truthfully. Apprentices start on a fraction of a journeyman's wage, commonly somewhere around half, stepping up each year. That means the first two years are the lean ones, and you should plan for that. Journeyman wages vary widely, but in most North American markets a licensed electrician working full time earns a solid middle-class living, and busy years with overtime can be substantially better. Union agreements typically add defined pensions and benefits on top of the wage; open-shop compensation varies more, in both directions.

The two things that reliably move the number: running work moves it up, and running your own shop moves it up further while adding all the risk and headache of ownership. And the number that never shows up in wage comparisons is the debt you did not take on. Starting your earning years at zero instead of five figures underwater changes the lifetime math more than most wage differences do.

How do you land your first apprenticeship?

This is the step that stalls people, because nobody hands it to you. There are three main doors.

Union training programs. You apply to the program (often through a joint apprenticeship committee), typically sit an aptitude test heavy on math and reading, and interview. Accepted applicants go into a pool and are dispatched to contractors. The structure is excellent; the waitlists can be real.

Direct to an open-shop contractor. You get hired by an electrical contractor who registers you as an apprentice. This is often the faster door, and it comes down to convincing one owner to take a chance on you.

Pre-apprenticeship programs. Technical colleges in many regions run short foundation programs. They are rarely mandatory, but they signal seriousness, teach basics, and often come with employer connections.

What contractors actually want in a first-year has nothing to do with electrical knowledge: shows up early, every day; has hand tools and boots; can do trade math without a fight; has a driver's license; listens. If you are cold-approaching contractors (and you should, in person, in the morning), the pitch is simple:

"I'm looking to start an electrical apprenticeship. I've got my own hand tools and boots, I'm reliable, and I'm happy doing the unglamorous work while I learn. Even if you're not hiring right now, can I leave my number in case something opens up?"

Then follow up. The person who calls back two weeks later gets remembered, because almost nobody calls back.

The long game

A meaningful share of the electricians who start this path end up, fifteen or twenty years in, with their name on the side of a van. It is worth knowing from the start that the apprenticeship teaches you everything about the craft and nothing about that part. School covers code and theory, and nobody ever teaches you how to quote a job, invoice it, and actually collect. Second year, paycheck cleared, friend still paying tuition. The other thing quietly accumulating across those four years is a file per address: what was behind the wall, what you charged, what you would do differently. Fifteen years later, when your name goes on a van, that file is the one part nobody can hand you late.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a college degree first?

No. A high school diploma (or equivalent) is the usual academic requirement, and math is the subject that matters. You will use algebra and basic trigonometry for real. A pre-apprenticeship certificate can help you get hired and may earn credit in some jurisdictions, but it is generally optional. What is never optional is passing the exams once you are in.

Am I too old to start at 30 or 40?

No, and adult apprentices are common. Employers often prefer them: a 35-year-old with a work history shows up, which is half the battle. The honest caveat is financial: first- and second-year wages are lean, and if you have a mortgage and kids, you need a plan for those years. The license at the end does not care how old you were when you started.

Union or non-union?

Both roads lead to the same license, and neither is a moral choice. Union programs offer structured wages, benefits, and pensions, with entry sometimes gated by testing and waitlists. Open-shop entry can be faster and more flexible, with more variance in pay and training quality between employers. The practical answer: look at who is actually hiring apprentices in your area, talk to electricians on both sides, and pick the door that opens.

How hard is the schooling, really?

Harder than people expect and easier than a degree. The math is real, the code book is dense, and the exams at each level are genuine gatekeepers. People do fail them. But it is applied learning tied directly to work you are doing all week, which is exactly the kind of learning that trade-minded people tend to be good at. Treat the school blocks like part of the job rather than a break from it, and you will be fine.
