The short answer: price electrical work by the opening, not by an hour-guess. Each device, fixture and circuit is a unit with known labor, known material and known rough-and-finish trips, so counting openings gives a number you can defend and repeat. Panels and service work price as assemblies for the same reason.
The panel swap was quoted at $2,800 and should have taken a day. Then the cover came off: double-tapped breakers feeding who-knows-what, a corroded neutral bar, aluminum branch circuits from a 1972 addition, and a grounding system that existed mostly in theory. Two days later the electrician has done beautiful, necessary work and made roughly nothing, because the price was set by looking at the outside of a gray box.
Electrical pricing has a specific character: the labor is skilled and expensive, the materials are countable, and the risk hides inside walls and enclosures you cannot open until you have the job. A pricing method that works has to handle all three.
Price by the opening, not by the hour-guess
For residential and light commercial wiring, the unit that works is the opening. Every device location gets a price that includes the rough-in, the wire run, the device, the plate, and the trim-out.
A typical structure looks like this:
- Standard receptacle (new circuit within reasonable run): one price, say $140 to $190 installed.
- Switch (single pole): similar. Three-way pairs priced as a pair, because the travelers are the cost.
- Light fixture location: a price for the box and wiring, with the fixture itself either supplied by you at cost-plus or by the client with a fixture-install price.
- Dedicated circuits (fridge, microwave, laundry, EV rough-in): each is an assembly price that includes the homerun and breaker.
- Specialty items (smoke/CO interconnected, bath fan with new duct, exterior pot lights) each get their own assembly rate.
Then there are the big assemblies that should never be priced per-opening: panel changes, service upgrades, generator inlets, EV chargers, subpanels. Each of these is a package price built from a materials list plus a realistic labor block plus permit costs, and each carries its own risk language, which we will get to.
Why openings instead of hours? Because counting is faster and more defensible than guessing. You can walk a basement with the homeowner, count 14 receptacles, 6 pot lights, 3 three-way pairs, 2 dedicated circuits, and a bath fan, and have a number before you reach the truck. The count is also the perfect audit trail when scope changes: when the client adds four pot lights over the bar, the price moves by exactly four line items and nobody argues.

What goes into an opening price?
An opening price that only covers wire and a device is a donation. Build each one from:
- Labor at your loaded rate. A licensed electrician's hour has to carry licensing, insurance, code-update courses, the van, the test equipment, and callbacks. If your loaded cost is $70 and you bill production at $110 to $140, an opening that takes 45 minutes across rough and trim carries roughly $85 to $105 of labor.
- Materials with waste. Wire at today's copper price, box, device, plate, staples, connectors, plus a waste factor. Copper moves; your prices should get reviewed whenever it does, not annually.
- A share of the fixed job costs. Permit, drive time, mobilization, panel work to land the circuits.
- Margin. On top, not "whatever is left."
A worked example: basement development wiring
A client is finishing an 800 sq ft basement: rec room, bedroom, bathroom, storage. Code drives much of the count, which is worth explaining to clients because it moves the conversation from "why so many receptacles" to "this is what passes inspection."
- 16 receptacles at $165: $2,640
- 10 pot lights at $185: $1,850
- 4 switches, incl. one three-way pair at $340: $620
- Bedroom smoke/CO interconnect tie-in: $290

Total: $8,100 plus tax, supplied fixtures at cost plus 20 percent if the client wants you to source them. About four to five crew-days of labor sit inside that number at sustainable rates, plus materials that have been priced off this month's copper, not last spring's.
Present it exactly like that, itemized. Electrical is invisible when finished; the itemized quote is the only moment the client ever sees what they bought.

The classic electrician underpricing traps
Old houses priced like new ones. The opening price that works in an open-stud basement dies in a 1948 story-and-a-half with plaster walls, blocking in every stud bay, and knob-and-tube surprises. Fishing one switch leg through finished plaster can take longer than roughing an entire new-build bedroom. Keep two rate columns: open construction and finished/fished. The finished rate is often 1.7 to 2.5 times the open rate, and quoting an old house from the open column is the single most common way electricians lose a week for free.
The panel that fails the closer look. Any job that lands circuits in an existing panel inherits that panel's condition. Price the tie-in on the assumption of a healthy panel, and write the assumption down: "Price assumes existing panel has capacity and is in serviceable condition; deficiencies found on opening will be quoted separately before proceeding." Now the corroded neutral bar is a change order, not your loss.
Code ripple effects. Touching some things obligates upgrading others; where that line falls varies by jurisdiction and code cycle. AFCI/GFCI requirements, smoke-alarm interconnection triggers, and grounding upgrades can add real cost to a "small" job. If you eat these silently to keep the quote pretty, you train yourself to underprice. Name them as lines: clients respect "the code requires" more than almost any other sentence in the trades.
Materials priced from memory. Wire prices move with the copper market. A price list set when 14/2 was cheap and quoted eight months later has quietly moved your margin to the supplier. Recheck your top ten materials whenever you restock, and let your unit prices follow.
Small service work needs its own floor
Everything above is sized for jobs with a scope. A large share of electrical revenue is not that; it is the single-item call. Swap a dead receptacle, add one exterior light, replace the bathroom fan that screams. Priced from your opening list alone, these jobs are a slow way to go broke. A $165 receptacle price is built to be one line among sixteen, sharing the drive and setup with fifteen siblings. Alone, it doesn't even cover the morning.
The fix is a service-call structure with a real floor. A first-hour rate that includes travel (say $180 to $240 for arrival plus the first hour of work), then a lower rate for additional time on the same visit. Quoted this way, the single receptacle is honest ("that's my one-hour minimum, $210, and if there's anything else on your list I can likely do it in the same visit"). That last clause is not a sales line. It is the actual economics: the second and third small tasks on a visit are the profitable ones, because the truck is already parked.
Two habits make small work reliably worth doing. First, triage on the phone: what is the panel type, how old is the house, is the fixture bought already, is anything aluminum. Three minutes of questions is the difference between arriving equipped and arriving to discover the job. Second, stock the van against your own history: the twenty devices, breakers, and fan models your last hundred calls actually needed. Every parts run in the middle of a small job converts its margin into driving.
And decide, in advance, what you say when the small call uncovers the big problem, because it will. The receptacle is dead because the back-stabbed run behind it cooked, and now there is a real repair to price with a homeowner standing next to you feeling ambushed by fate. The wrong move is absorbing an hour of investigation into the minimum. The right move is the same structure as always: finish the diagnosis, name the finding, quote the fix as its own number, and let the client decide with photos in hand.
Fixed price or time-and-materials?
Fixed price everything you can count and see: new circuits in open construction, defined assemblies like panel changes and EV chargers with stated assumptions, basement developments off a plan, service upgrades after a site look. Fixed pricing wins jobs and pays you for having good production habits.
Time-and-materials belongs to diagnosis and discovery: troubleshooting the circuit that trips "sometimes," tracing an unlabeled panel, opening up after water damage, and any work inside walls whose contents you cannot verify. Quote it with structure so it doesn't feel open-ended:
"Troubleshooting is $130 an hour with a one-hour minimum. Most faults like this one are found inside two hours. When I find it, I'll stop and give you a fixed price for the repair before I fix anything."
That last sentence is the trust-builder: diagnosis is hourly, repair is quoted. Clients accept the split immediately because each half is priced the way its risk deserves.
Keeping the count honest from walkthrough to invoice
The per-opening method has one operational requirement: your unit prices have to exist somewhere more durable than your head, and the count you quoted has to be the count you invoice against.

Frequently asked questions
Should I charge for estimates on electrical work?
For defined installation work, free quotes are the market norm and a paid estimate mostly filters out real jobs. The exception is anything that requires investigation to price: troubleshooting, old-house rewiring surveys, load calculations for service upgrades. Charge for those as diagnostic work, and credit the fee against the job if you're hired. You are not charging for the quote; you are charging for the investigation that makes the quote possible.
How do I price supplied fixtures the client picked out?
Install-only pricing, per fixture, tiered by complexity: a flush mount is not a 60-pound chandelier on an 18-foot ceiling. Add a written note that client-supplied fixtures carry no product warranty from you and that defective-out-of-box fixtures bill a return-trip fee. That one sentence prevents the worst small-job argument in residential electrical.
What margin should electrical materials carry?
Cost plus 20 to 35 percent is common and defensible: you selected them, stocked them, warranty them, and drove them there. Do not show materials at bare cost to look cheaper; the markup is paying for the second trip when a breaker is defective.
My competitor's panel-change price is $900 below mine. How?
